An Outer Banks Wedding
by Cathy Baldwin

Alex and Marc are a local couple she's from a multi-generational restaurant family (you might have heard of Miller's Restaurants), and he's a Currituck country boy at heart. For this home-grown couple, marrying on the Outer Banks was only natural. But this was no small-town affair more than 350 friends and family were on hand to celebrate the day with the happy couple!

Their Love Story Fireworks!
The Fourth of July, 2004, was the first time sparks flew between Alex and Marc. Alex was home from college for the summer, and admittedly unhappy about being away from her friends. On the Fourth of July she happened to run into Marc at a party. He'd been her older brother's friend and neighbor for years. Though Marc had has his eye on Alex for quite some time, it wasn't until that night that she started to see him as something more. A few days later Marc called and asked her to go to a Keith Urban concert with him. It wasn't long before the two were inseparable

.
One year later, and still going strong, Marc and Alex took the boat out on beautiful Kerr Lake while on vacation. After a fun-filled day of fishing, sunbathing and wakeboarding, Marc's mood turned from fun-loving to serious. Marc walked Alex to the bow of the boat, dropped to his knee and asked Alex to marry him. A thrilled and surprised Alex recalls the moment in one simple word: "Perfect."

The Big Day
After a little over a year of preparations and planning most of it long distance as Alex was finishing up school in Wilmington the day finally arrived. It took nearly all seven bridesmaids to get Alex into her billowy white wedding gown, but the effort paid off. "My mom cried when she saw me," says Alex. But tears dried quickly as the girls rushed off to the ceremony at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church.

Peeking into the church at all of the people waiting for her to make her entrance, Alex's nerves got the better of her. "I stumbled a little but I don't think anyone saw it." The momentary lapse of balance eased her tension, and Alex gracefully glided down the aisle to her waiting beau.

After the I do's were said and rings exchanged, Marc surprised Alex with the getaway car his father's immaculately restored, fire-engine red 1971 Chevy pick-up truck! When they were engaged, Alex had hinted to Marc's father that she'd love to have his truck on her wedding day. Little did Alex know, he was listening.

Getting into the truck proved to be a bit of a challenge for Alex in her wedding dress. Marc had to actually shove the dress into the truck to make it all fit! Finally in the truck, the couple made quite the exit. "We burned a little rubber leaving the church!" Alex laughs.

There's No Place Like Home
Alex's parents' waterfront home in Kitty Hawk provided the perfect backdrop for their sunset reception. A big white tent spread out across the expanse of the lawn, complete with a black and white checkered dance floor and an extensive buffet inside. The mouth-watering spread included all of the couples' favorite food from bacon-wrapped scallops to Alex's dessert of choice chocolate-covered strawberries. "Those were a special treat," says Alex. The day before the wedding, as her caterer hand-dipped hundreds of strawberries in melted chocolate, he took the time to prepare a small plate just for the blushing (and hungry!) bride.

But strawberries weren't the only mouthwatering dessert on hand. The wedding cake with four tiers of alternating polka dots and stripes was almost too beautiful to be eaten! The pink and white icing and cascading pink and white lily blooms were a nod to her sorority Phi Mu, which shares the same colors. Dozens of Alex's Phi Mu sisters made the journey from Wilmington to share her special day with her.

Dancing the Night Away
Alex chose the Craig Woolard Band from Raleigh because of her love for beach music. Shag, '60s, even some of today's hits if it's beachy and fun to dance to, the Craig Woolard Band probably played it at Alex and Marc's reception. Long after the reception was scheduled to end, the band rocked the party well into the night. Surrounded by family and friends, Marc and Alex danced the night away. "I danced so much that I broke the bustle on my dress!" laughs Alex.
